Dr. Hans-Peter Friedrich, will welcome sport ministers from all over the world

In six weeks, the Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Hans-Peter Friedrich, will welcome sport ministers from all over the world to the fifth UNESCO World Sport Ministers Conference in Berlin. UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, Sir Philip Craven, president of the International Paralympic Committee, and boxing world champion Wladimir Klitschko are expected to attend the official opening.

The conference will focus on three key topics:

  • Preserving the integrity of sport, that is, the fight against match-fixing, corruption and doping;
  • Access to sport as a fundamental right for all, covering the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and increasing the participation of girls and women in and through sport; and
  • Promoting investment in sport and physical education programmes and discussing socio-economic factors of sport as well as standards for large-scale sporting events and their sustainability.

About 500 persons are expected to attend the conference in Berlin, most of them ministers responsible for sport in the 195 UNESCO member states and eight associate members, as well as experts and delegations from the United Nations, other international organizations, major international sport organizations and NGOs.

The fifth UNESCO World Sport Ministers Conference is organized by the Federal Ministry of the Interior in cooperation with UNESCO and with the help of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE).
