New ways to come to Germany from Africa

Accra (dpa) – During a visit to Ghana, Germany’s Labour Minister Hubertus Heil and Development Minister Svenja Schulze have unveiled plans for more controlled labour migration to Germany, talking of a “paradigm shift in German migration policy”. Among other things, this means lowering the hurdles for skilled labour immigration. A corresponding law is in the process of being prepared. The idea is to provide people keen to emigrate with better support in their home countries too.

“The goal is to use safe, regular and orderly migration for mutual benefit,” the government announced. Heil said that there are many young people in Ghana who are well trained but have virtually no opportunities on the domestic labour market at present. A Ghanaian-German migration advice centre in Accra, which opened in 2017, is to be further developed into a fully-fledged “Centre for Jobs, Migration and Development”.
