The EU’s Justice and Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg discussed extending the protection status for refugees from Ukraine and rapidly implementing the EU’s new rules on migration and asylum.

At the meeting of the EU’s Justice and Home Affairs Council, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser and her European Union counterparts discussed extending the protection status for refugees from Ukraine and carrying out the newly adopted reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Federal Minister Faeser supported extending the protection status of refugees from Ukraine for another year, and said that Germany alone has taken in 1.17 million refugees. “We will continue to save lives and stand by Ukraine,” she said. However, she pointed out that Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic have admitted approximately 50% of the refugees from Ukraine who have entered the EU. She called for better distribution of refugees in the EU and for financial support for the countries that have admitted them.

Advancing CEAS reform

The day before the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting, the European Commission published the plan for implementing the newly adopted package of EU legislation on migration and asylum, known as the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Federal Minister Faeser thanked European Commissioner Ylva Johansson for her rapid action and announced that the CEAS reform would be swiftly applied in German law. “With the migration and asylum package, it is important to increase solidarity when it comes to distributing refugees in Europe. In particular, the rules to improve registration and border checks must be followed, and the checks at the external borders must be effective,” Federal Minister Faeser said, adding that the countries at the EU’s external borders needed support in the form of a European solution.

The Council also discussed strengthening crisis preparedness and fighting organised crime and the sexual abuse of children.
