This summer of sport enters the next round, with the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris taking place from 28 August to 8 September. Some 4,400 athletes from 182 countries will be competing in the French capital, including more than 140 German athletes in sports ranging from wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball to boccia. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser, whose ministry is also responsible for sport, presented Friedhelm Julius Beucher, president of the National Paralympic Committee Germany (DBS), and Dr Karl Quade, DBS vice-president for high-performance sport, with the Federal Government’s best wishes for Germany’s Paralympic athletes. Federal Minister Faeser wishes the German team the best of luck.

Meeting with the French interior minister to discuss security-related issues

Federal Minister Faeser thanked her French counterpart, Gérald Darmanin, for the close cooperation between the German and French security authorities during the summer’s major sport events – the men’s European Football Championship, the Summer Olympics and the Paralympic Games. To increase security, temporary checks were reintroduced at Germany’s border with France and continue until 30 September 2024

Germany’s bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games

Germany’s planned bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2040 will meet the same high standards set by the French hosts this year. A German bid is intended to promote sport in many ways, including improving access to sport for people with a disability. “Olympic and Paralympic Games represent a great opportunity for our country,” Federal Minister Faeser said. “Not only do they inspire enthusiasm for sport, they can also strengthen social cohesion and boost the economy.” In early August, Federal Minister Faeser signed a joint declaration with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and participating cities and federal states on submitting a bid to host the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2040. The entire Federal Government supports a bid and has made available funds of nearly €7 million to 2027.

Funding from the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community

The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community supports high-performance sport for people with a disability, for example by providing total funding of approximately €2.3 million to send German Paralympic athletes to the Paris games. The Federal Ministry also provides ongoing support for the National Paralympic Committee Germany (DBS). This support is intended to enable optimal preparation for the Paralympic Games and the future challenges of sport.
