Adoption of the Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge (24 May 2024)

France welcomes the May 24th adoption of the Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge. It is the culmination of 25 years of negotiations at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

This compromise text will help strengthen the protection of genetic resources and the associated traditional knowledge of indigenous people and local communities while guaranteeing a protective framework for innovation.

It aims to boost the effectiveness, transparency and caliber of the patent system in order to ensure respect for the implementation of access conditions and the sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources.

It guarantees the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol and the Biodiversity Agreement for Areas beyond National Jurisdictions (BBNJ).
