“All Quiet on the Western Front” wins British film awards

London (dpa) – “All Quiet on the Western Front”, the German war-time drama nominated for nine Oscars, has won seven Baftas – as the British film awards are known – including for Best Film. Director Edward Berger’s new film adaptation of the novel by Erich Maria Remarque about the First World War has thus won more Bafta awards than any non-English-language film before it. “I can’t believe it,” said Berger, who won the award for Best Director. Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) was honoured as Best Leading Actress and Austin Butler (“Elvis”) as Best Leading Actor.

After the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the Baftas are among the most highly coveted awards. The Oscars will be presented in three weeks’ time, when “All Quiet on the Western Front” is nominated in several categories, including Best Picture and Best International Feature.
