Partnership to reduce irregular migration and strengthen labour migration.

Following Federal Minister of the Interior and Community Nancy Faeser’s successful visit to Morocco in October 2023, an interministerial delegation led by Dr Joachim Stamp, Federal Government Special Commissioner for Migration Agreements, has now agreed a comprehensive migration partnership with Morocco. The aim of this cooperation is to reduce irregular migration and strengthen legal labour migration.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser said: “I had very constructive talks with our Moroccan partners when I visited Rabat in autumn last year. During this visit, we started a new chapter in our cooperation. I am delighted that we have now been able to build on these efforts and agree to establish joint working mechanisms to reduce irregular migration and strengthen legal labour migration. This is in our shared interest. We want to rigorously enforce the return of people who have no right to remain in our country. At the same time, we want to attract skilled workers that we urgently need in many sectors of our economy.”

Special Commissioner Dr Joachim Stamp said: I am very pleased that we have agreed on comprehensive migration cooperation with Morocco enabling us to work in a spirit of trust and friendship towards reducing irregular migration and strengthening legal pathways to the labour market for the benefit of both our countries.”

Germany and Morocco have agreed to establish bilateral working mechanisms. The government agencies of both countries will work closely together to consistently coordinate all security measures aimed at enabling well-managed labour migration and facilitating returns of Moroccan nationals without the right to stay in Germany. Working groups with experts in these fields and a steering group will meet regularly to enhance the partnership.

During a visit to Tbilisi in December 2023, Federal Minister Faeser already signed a migration agreement with Georgia. In addition, Georgia and Moldova were designated as safe countries of origin.
