Together with other members of the Federal Cabinet, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser travelled to Warsaw for German-Polish government consultations.

For the first time in six years, the governments of Poland and Germany met for joint government consultations to advance the cooperation between the two countries. The talks focused on issues related to security, defence, assistance for Ukraine, strengthening the EU and closer cooperation in the business and transport sectors as well as in the field of energy security. In constructive talks, the ministerial counterparts exchanged views on specific issues in their remits.

Leveraging potential for cooperation

Interior Minister Faeser stated that, as neighbours and member states of the European Union, Germany and Poland shared many challenges and opportunities. She emphasised that both countries needed to pool their efforts to confront challenges such as the war in Ukraine and its impacts on Europe and to deal with illegal migration, organised crime and natural disasters.

Bilateral talks

Federal Minister Faeser conducted bilateral talks with her Polish counterparts Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak and Sport Minister Slawomir Nitras on how to further strengthen border police cooperation, combat migrant smuggling and enhance cooperation in cross-border disaster response. They also discussed ways to ensure European solidarity in admitting further refugees from Ukraine. Furthermore, they explored possibilities for strengthening cooperation in the field of sport. In this context, Federal Minister Faeser specifically commended the trusting cooperation between the Polish and German law enforcement and border police authorities, stressing that people in both countries were united by a shared passion for sport.
