Germany and France propose setting new standards for sustainable and inclusive sporting events
press release
13 March 2024
The Joint Declaration of the German and the French ministers responsible for sport / Environmental and social commitments made for EURO 2024 and the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games should become the standard in future
As part of their joint declaration of 15 June 2021 on cooperation in the field of sport, Germany and France are further enhancing their cooperation in this area. Federal Minister Nancy Faeser, who is also responsible for sport, and the French minister for sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, today signed a joint declaration on a new model for more sustainable, more responsible and more inclusive international sporting events.

Joint statement by Federal Minister Nancy Faeser and French Minister for Sport Amélie Oudéa-Castéra in Paris: “By signing this declaration, we want to start the ball rolling so that the environmental and social commitments and commitments to responsible government action, which our two countries make for the international sporting events in the summer of 2024 endure and become the standard in future – for our two countries and, we hope, for the entire EU and beyond.”
This statement builds on the commitments made at the Franco-German Council of Ministers in January 2023. On that occasion, the German and the French government expressed their desire to consider defining new standards for hosting major sporting events and, in the process, to take into account high standards for environmental and social sustainability and for responsible government action. This statement is also part of the framework of German–French cooperation on the 2024 summer of sport, which is marked by two major sporting events: the European championship in men’s football in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024, and the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games in France, from 26 July to 11 August and from 28 August to 8 September 2024, respectively.
