For approximately nine months now, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) has provided support to war victims in Ukraine, its neighbouring countries and in Germany. Local sections of the THW have already conducted 355 transport operations to ship relief goods to Ukraine and the neighbouring countries.

Generators to stabilise Ukraine’s energy supply

A large part of the resources provided for humanitarian assistance is used to purchase generators. These are urgently needed in Ukraine, given that Russia’s attacks have systematically destroyed parts of the country’s critical infrastructure. As a result, power plants have been damaged and thousands of households are temporarily left without electricity and the possibility to heat their homes. Hospitals as well as other civilian and governmental facilities are also affected.

“We have been working for months to help Ukraine quickly restore its damaged infrastructure and make it through the winter,” Federal Minister of the Interior and Community Nancy Faeser said. “And we will continue to do our utmost to support Ukraine.”

The THW will ship a total of 480 generators to Ukraine – the most provided by any EU member state. Nearly 200 generators have already been delivered, some of them directly to Ukraine’s largest energy supplier Ukrenergo, to stabilise the country’s energy supply. Ukrenergo uses the generators to ensure the temporary energy supply of key facilities.

In addition, the THW regularly transports winter clothing, heaters, fuel, insulating material and food to Ukraine. Relief goods also include medical supplies, medicines and motor vehicles.

People from Ukraine are also receiving help in Germany. Around 600 wounded and injured persons have been taken to hospitals in Germany for treatment. This makes Germany the country that has accepted by far the largest number of patients from Ukraine. The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) coordinates the allocation of patients.
