International conference for justice ministers in support of the International Criminal Court
Justice and Security Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius and her British counterpart and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab are hosting an international conference on 20 March to support the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigations into international crimes, including the Ukraine investigation. Justice ministers from around the world will gather in London in March to join this effort.
During the conference, the ministers will discuss further options to support the ICC Prosecutor in this considerable task. Support can include both financial and practical assistance, such as assistance in gathering information and gathering evidence of international crimes committed. Consideration is also underway on how witnesses can relate their accounts without compounding their distress further through re-traumatisation.
Evidencing atrocities
More than a year has passed since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. A brutal war has since raged in Ukraine, crucial infrastructure has been targeted and people are living in fear. In reclaimed zones, investigators continue to find evidence of atrocities that have taken place.
“The reports and images of Russia’s illegal and unprovoked armed attack on Ukraine are horrifying. To us, the situation is crystal clear: these crimes must not go unpunished. During this conference, we will collaborate with our partners to ensure that even more support is offered to the ICC and the Ukrainian authorities.”
stated Yeşilgöz-Zegerius.
Forensic investigation
In 2022, the Netherlands dispatched two forensic investigation teams to Ukraine to collect evidence that could be used in investigations into crimes committed in the country. Those two teams operated under the banner of the International Criminal Court. Two additional missions are planned for this year.
The Netherlands also made a voluntary financial contribution of €2 million to the ICC Prosecutor’s Office Trust Fund. Additionally, staff from the National Police and the Dutch Public Prosecution Service have been posted to the ICC.
Conference
The conference will take place at Lancaster House in London and will be co-chaired by Yeşilgöz-Zegerius and Raab. Ministers from at least 30 countries will attend. The conference will conclude with a press conference.
