Netherlands to make an extra EUR 10 million available for emergency aid to Sudan

The Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Aukje de Vries has announced that the Netherlands is making an extra EUR 10 million available for emergency aid to Sudan. The money will be used to provide urgent assistance to the Sudanese people through the United Nations’ Sudan Humanitarian Fund.

‘Sudan is the worst humanitarian crisis the world is currently facing,’ Ms De Vries explains. ‘More than 21 million people are affected by acute food insecurity and it has been established that there is famine in some parts of the country. The recent violence in the city of El Fasher and the wider Darfur region has only worsened the situation. It is extremely important that the Netherlands provides extra aid, and that we keep up the international pressure to bring about a truce and ensure compliance with international humanitarian law, including improved access to humanitarian aid and protection of aid workers.’

Outbreaks of violence in Darfur

The siege and fall of the city of El Fasher has resulted in atrocities against the civilian population and new flows of refugees. Tawila, a town in Darfur, has been inundated with 650,000 refugees within a short space of time, causing acute shortages. Throughout Sudan there are problems accessing food, water and medicine. Reaching the people who most need help is also challenging, not only because of the unsafe situation and logistical issues but also due to administrative impediments. In areas that are particularly hard to access, local inhabitants are playing an important role, with women and young people volunteering to provide food, protection and medical aid. The Netherlands’ contribution will help the Sudan Humanitarian Fund continue to support these initiatives.

Aid for Sudan

The extra contribution brings the Netherlands’ support for emergency aid to Sudan in 2025 to a total of more than EUR 33 million (which includes contributions to the Dutch Relief Alliance and to the Red Cross and Red Crescent). The Netherlands had already contributed EUR 16 million to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund and is also helping Sudan through a number of other channels. For example, in 2025 the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), to which the Netherlands contributes EUR 55 million on an annual basis, has provided USD 47 million in aid to Sudan. The Netherlands is also helping to fund the reception of Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries. More than 9 million people have been internally displaced, and 4 million Sudanese have fled to other countries in the region.
