Understood.org commits to combating misinformation about neurodivergence at Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting

• The “Commitment to Action” will expand Understood News, the organization’s dedicated news and content studio
• Understood News has driven 140,000 people to expert-vetted information on neurodivergence in 2026

NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Understood.org, a nonprofit supporting people navigating neurodivergence, today announced a commitment at the 2026 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting to combat misinformation around ADHD, dyslexia and other forms of neurodivergence. The organization will achieve this by strategically expanding Understood News, its in-house newsroom that combines rigorous journalism, evidence-based research and subject matter expertise from Understood’s Expert Network. The goal: help families and caregivers make sense of daily headlines, without bias.

“Misinformation is one of the most dangerous challenges of our generation. We’re especially alarmed at the rise of false and misleading information about neurodivergence. Through our commitment and the support of the Clinton Global Initiative, we will expand Understood News efforts so we can equip more families and creators with science-backed, unbiased information,” said Nathan Friedman, co-president of Understood.org.

Understood highlighted this commitment during the “Building Trust With Creators” session at the CGI Annual Meeting. As parents increasingly turn to social media and online forums for guidance, they often encounter content that lacks fact-checking. This allows misinformation to spread easily, despite the best intentions of creators.

False narratives are especially concerning for the neurodivergent community, as research suggests that people with neurodivergent traits may be more susceptible to misinformation. Social media is a major contributor: on TikTok, 52% of videos about ADHD and 41% of videos about autism are misleading.

Understood News will focus on critical issue areas where misinformation is especially pervasive and harmful to the neurodivergent community, including:

• ADHD diagnosis trends
• Medication access
• Vaccines
• Mental health and suicidality
• Support for neurodivergent women and girls

The organization will collaborate with trusted creators, local media, and partners including Gallup, the Edelman Trust Institute, Voices for Vaccines and Eviva Partners to deliver accurate information directly to people where they already are.
