On this International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, France reaffirms its commitment to combat this inhumane practice and expresses its solidarity with the victims and their loved ones. France commends the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the Council of Europe, international and regional organizations, civil society organizations and human rights defenders for their efforts in this regard.
France will never stop supporting the victims and their loved ones. It financially supports the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture and applauds its work.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the UN’s adoption of the International Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. This convention was signed and ratified by 174 countries, the vast majority of UN member states. As it pledged on December 10, 2023, during the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, France supports the universalization and implementation of the Convention and its Optional Protocol.
