Libya – France supports the mediation efforts of the UN Support Mission (6 September 2024)

France supports the mediation efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to resolve the Central Bank of Libya’s governance crisis. France calls on all the stakeholders to work with the UNSMIL in good faith to find a compromise.

There is an urgent need to end this crisis, which threatens the economic stability and security of the country and compromises Libya’s relations with the international financial institutions. The prolongation of this crisis will bear significant consequences for the Libyan people, in particular regarding the provision of essential goods.

This latest development illustrates the country’s growing concerning fragmentation in the absence of a unified government. France therefore reiterates its commitment to the unity, transparency, and accountability of all of the Libyan institutions. The end of the current tensions and Libya’s political, economic, and security-related stability can only be guaranteed in the long term with the resumption of the political process and the establishment of a unified government that is capable of holding presidential and legislative elections in accordance with the will of the Libyan people.
