Situation in the Middle East (02.10.24)

France condemns the attack directed against Israel with ballistic missiles fired from Iran. It reiterates its absolute commitment to Israel’s security. It helped ward off the Iranian threat with its military capabilities in the Middle East. A few hours before, a terrorist attack targeted civilians in Jaffa, killing 7 and injuring 10, according to initial reports. We utterly condemn this attack and extend our condolences to the victims’ families. Civilians must always be protected.

France recalls the need to end the military escalation in the region, which only serves to worsen instability and increase insecurity, of which civilian populations are the first victims. France calls on Israel to end its military operations in Lebanon as quickly as possible. Hezbollah must stop its terrorist actions against Israel and its people.

In view of the regional escalation, France has asked for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council dedicated to the Middle East situation. It will be held in New York today, Wednesday 2 October.

Finally, yesterday evening President Macron convened a meeting of the Defence and Security Council devoted to the situation in the Middle East. After going to the region, as soon as he took office, on 30 September, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs M. Jean-Noël Barrot will pay another visit to the Middle East in the next few days.
