Baerbock and Faeser pledge help for earthquake victims

Gaziantep (dpa) – Germany has promised the best possible acute assistance and ongoing support with reconstruction for those affected by the devastating earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border region. “Our sympathy goes beyond words and will not diminish,” Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock promised during a joint visit to the southeast of Turkey with Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

A day earlier, at a memorial service at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had called upon people in Germany to provide long-term help for the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria. Two powerful earthquakes had shaken southeast Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February. More than 47,000 people lost their lives as a result.
