Baerbock: Push through Nato expansion

Helsinki (dpa) – Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has appealed for Turkey and Hungary to pave the way for Finland and Sweden to join Nato. “At the Nato summit in Madrid last summer, we jointly established the foundation for their accession, and we naturally expect all Nato members to implement this decision without any further delay,” she said in Helsinki. Baerbock said that their accession would result in “our alliance gaining two valuable new members with whom we already work very, very closely in any case”.

Finland and Sweden had jointly applied for Nato membership in May 2022 in light of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
