Extra Dutch support for the International Criminal Court

Extra Dutch support for the International Criminal Court

Today, the Dutch Minister of Justice and Security Yeşilgöz-Zegerius will commit extra support to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Last year, the ICC started investigating war crimes committed during the war in Ukraine.

An additional € 1 million will be added to the € 2 million previously promised by the Netherlands. € 0.5 million for the support of victims and witnesses of such crimes as sexual and gender-related violence and violence against children, and € 0.5 million for the ICC fund which enables employing the capacity and knowledge of other countries.

In addition, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius will repeat the commitment made that Dutch teams will travel to Ukraine under the flag of the ICC for forensic investigation on site in the coming year too. These teams will consist of forensic, digital and tactical detectives of the military constabulary, along with experts from other defence departments.

Today, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom jointly organise an international conference in London where Ministers of Justice from over 30 countries will discuss the consequences of war crimes in Ukraine.

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius hopes for a successful conference:

“As an international community, we must take responsibility for ensuring that the perpetrators of the crimes committed during the war in Ukraine will be persecuted. Together, we must ensure that evidence is secured and witnesses are heard, but we must also provide trauma support to the victims. The Ukraine people has shown more than once how strong they are; hardened but never broken. They deserve our support in achieving justice.”
