Proposal to extend the Temporary Protection Directive until 4 March 2027 for refugees from Ukraine
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is not over yet. That is why the European Commission submitted a proposal to the EU Member States on 4 June 2025 to extend the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) by one year until 4 March 2027.
The European Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs reached today political agreement at a meeting in Luxembourg. Formal decision-making in the Council of the European Union is expected to follow at the end of June.
When millions of people from Ukraine fled due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Council of the European Union activated the TPD on 4 March 2022. This gives temporarily displaced persons from Ukraine a temporary right to shelter, medical care, work and education in all EU Member States.
