The Netherlands and Morocco are working on an extradition treaty
The Netherlands and Morocco are negotiating an extradition treaty to ramp up the fight against organised crime. This is stated in a letter by Minister of Justice and Security Yeşilgöz-Zegerius submitted to the House of Representatives today. Violent criminal networks operate globally to advance their drugs and arms trafficking and are trying to launder their criminal proceeds through international schemes. The Netherlands and Morocco want to intensify their collaboration in the fight against organised crime and a bilateral extradition treaty will further strengthen this collaboration.
‘The impact of organised crime on our society is deeply concerning. We are seeing that criminal networks make huge sums of money from the international drugs trade, with which they are attempting to infiltrate and corrupt our legal economy through underground banking and money laundering schemes. At the same time, we are experiencing drugs-related violence in our streets and young people are being recruited into a life of crime. By joining forces with Morocco, we will be better able to the disrupt and dismantle the criminal power structures along with the criminals that operate them.’
says Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius.
The collaboration with Morocco is part of an international future agenda for tackling organised and subversive crime, which the Minister of Justice and Security announced in July of last year. A bilateral extradition treaty will broaden the range of offences for which extradition can take place between the two countries and will make it possible to make specific agreements on procedures. Under a bilateral treaty, each extradition request will still be assessed separately on the basis of legal and treaty frameworks. As soon as agreements have been made with Morocco on an extradition treaty, this will be submitted to parliament for further implementation through the usual procedures.
