Site found for Future Centre

Halle (dpa) – Halle an der Saale is to be home to the planned Future Centre for German Unity and European Transformation. This was proposed by a selection committee that was able to choose between five applications. Besides Halle, Frankfurt (Oder), Eisenach, Jena and a joint bid by Leipzig and Plauen were in the running. All these towns are located in eastern Germany.

The Future Centre is to celebrate the achievements of German unification and make it possible to draw on the experience gained from it during future upheavals and crises. Following an architectural competition, a “building with outstanding modern architecture” costing up to 200 million euros is to be constructed by 2028. 40 million euros per year are earmarked to cover its running costs. The Centre is intended to be both a meeting place and a research centre, attracting up to a million people each year. The German government plans to follow the jury’s site recommendation.
